Anna Maria Island vs Siesta Key, which should you choose? They have become a popular spot to vacation in Florida.

When it comes to choosing your Florida beach vacation, you want to make sure you’re making the right choice. After all, most of us have limited time off and vacations can be quite an investment.

I love both Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key. Both beach towns have a lot to offer. They are in close proximity to one another with only 27 miles in between. Anna Maria and Siesta Key both have a laid back feel and are home to some of the best beaches on Florida’s gulf coast. But to make your decision easier, we’ll take a look at what makes each city unique.

Location

Both Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key are located on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Anna Maria Island is north of Siesta Key and shares an island with Bradenton Beach. It’s common for places in Bradenton Beach to be referred to as Anna Maria Island.

Siesta Key is closer to Sarasota. Both are great for day trips from St Petersburg with Anna Maria Island being slightly closer to St Pete.

Activities

One major difference between Anna Maria Island vs Siesta Key is that Anna Maria Island does have a pier whereas Siesta Key does not. This can be great for walking (especially at sunset), unique views, and fishing. It also has a fun little history as it used to be where the boats would drop off visitors from St Petersburg. They would then spend the day wandering Pine Avenue.

Siesta Key also has the Siesta Key drum circle, which is a popular and unique event. If you aren’t familiar with a drum circle, basically it’s a gathering of drummers and dancers. They play music and there is dancing. It’s an event that’s inclusive to everyone and a fun time for all involved.

Restaurants

Anna Maria Island has more restaurants. They are also some of the best restaurants with options for both nicer and laid back dining.

Anna Maria Island is one of the best places to eat on the water. There are also more restaurant options in general in Anna Maria. My personal favorite waterfront restaurant is Sandbar.

Night Life

While Anna Maria Island wins in the restaurant department, Siesta Key has the better nightlife. There are still some wonderful bars in Anna Maria Island, most are laid back type of places. But Siesta Key has plenty of bars and nightlife.

Accommodation

Both Siesta Key or Anna Maria Island have a lot of vacation rentals. They both offer a great option for every size of family, too. They have smaller options for couples as well as huge options for multiple families to get together.

You won’t find a lot of hotels on either island and there definitely aren’t large chains. You can find nice vacation homes on airbnb or vrbo in both Anna Maria and Siesta Key.

Siesta Key hotels: The Inn on Siesta Key and Twin Palms at Siesta.

Cost

Both vacation destinations to be comparable to one another. I feel like the cost will be dependent on a number of variables. This could change if you happen to find a good deal on a vacation rental or conversely if you wait too long to book your vacation rental and have to pay more.

Traffic

Since Florida is a popular vacation destination, traffic is to be expected. This is especially true when you are visiting beaches that have a single main road like in Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key. Anna Maria Island is very golf cart and bike friendly, making it easy to get around the island without a car.

Both Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key have free shuttles.

Siesta Key Breeze Trolley:

• You can hop on the trolley at Siesta Key Village and there are plenty of trolley stops you can get on or off throughout the island
• Operates 7 days/week
• Hours are 8 am to 10 pm daily

Siesta Key also has Breeze OnDemand, a public ride share service. It runs between Siesta Key and the mainland for $2 per person per trip.

Anna Maria Island Trolley:

• The trolley is free
• It starts at the Anna Maria City Pier and ends at Coquina Beach
• It stops every 2-4 blocks along the route

Beach

If pristine white sand beaches are what you want, you’ll love Siesta Key. The sand on Siesta Key Beach has more luxurious sand. Most sand is quartz, coral, and other minerals but on Siesta Key, it is 99% quartz. This makes the sand silky and cooler, even on hot days.

But if you are looking for shelling, Anna Maria has better shelling.

But both beaches are a perfect place to take a long or short walk to enjoy the coast. Anna Maria Island has seven miles of beaches and Siesta Key has 8 miles of beaches. They both have stunning blue water that you’d expect from a Florida gulf coast beach and both offer amazing sunsets.

Both Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key have lifeguards at various beaches on the island. They also both have plenty of public beach access.

Shopping

Siesta Key is home to the Siesta Key Village, which has various restaurants and also some shopping opportunities. But Anna Maria Island has more shopping opportunities with Pine Avenue or Gulf Drive having several stores you could spend all day wandering around. You can also take the free trolley in Anna Maria to get to other shopping areas, such as Cortez Village.

Both Anna Maria and Siesta Key have farmers markets. Siesta Key’s is on Sundays from 9 am to 2 pm. Anna Maria has the Bridge Street Market Sundays from 10-3 (November – April) and the Coquina Beach Market Sundays from 12-6, Wednesdays from 10-4, and Fridays 10-4 (approximately October – April).
