Morning: South Beach & Art Deco Charm

South Beach is one of my favorite areas to visit and it makes a great first stop on your day in Miami. I love starting my morning there with a walk along South Beach before the city really wakes up.

This is where you’ll find all the fun lifeguard stands!

You’ll want to wander around Ocean Drive to explore Miami’s Art Deco District. This is where you will find the iconic colorful pastel buildings. They were originally built between 1925 and 1940 and no two are quite the same.

There are over 800 historic buildings in the Art Deco District!

I also suggest heading to the Art Deco Museum if you have time. You’ll learn more about the design styles that Miami is known for (Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, and Miami Modern) as well as more about the history. It’s also one of the more affordable things to do in Miami – admission is under $10 per person.

We have always wanted to take the Art Deco Walking Tour but it just hasn’t worked out for us on any of our trips so we’ve always done our own self-guided tour. But this is definitely on our bucket list to do one day soon!

There are tons of good breakfast options – enough for an entire post about it, honestly. But we really like Café Bastille. Their food is delicious and they have great specialty coffee drinks. They also have locations in Downtown Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Mid-Morning: Choose Your Adventure – Wynwood or Little Havana

While I truly think that Wynwood and Little Havana are each a must-visit destination, you’ll probably have to either choose between the two or replace one of the other activities on this itinerary to fully experience both in one day.

Wynwood is a great choice if you like art. Wynwood is most famous for Wynwood Walls (which used to be free but now does have a general admission fee) which is an open-air gallery of tons of art.

But truthfully, the entire area of Wynwood has plenty of amazing street art to take in even without Wynwood Walls. There are also great cafes and restaurants in the area.

For a budget friendly but still delicious lunch, check out La Sandwicherie (there are a few other locations, including one in Miami Beach). They have been around since the 1980’s and their sandwiches are delicious. But they are arguably most known for their French vinaigrette so make sure you get some!

Little Havana is one of the best ways to experience Latin and Cuban culture. You’ll want to walk down Calle Ocho, the main street in Little Havana. This area is known for its rich culture and lively atmosphere.

Grab a Cuban coffee, watch locals play dominos at Máximo Gómez Park, and browse locally owned shops.

Little Havana is also the best place for good Cuban food and cigars. You can even watch the cigars being made!

If you go to Little Havana, definitely try some authentic Cuban food (if you have time, I highly recommend taking a food tour). Good options are a Cuban sandwich, croquetas, or a plate of ropa vieja.

Afternoon: Museums and Mansions by the Bay

Cool off in the afternoon with a dose of Miami’s cultural side. Visit the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to see contemporary works in a stunning bayfront setting, or head next door to the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science for interactive exhibits and a planetarium.

I also listed additional options at the end of this article if you want more ideas.

Late Afternoon: Scenic Ride and Bayfront Stroll

Hop on the free Metromover for a fun and convenient ride through the downtown area. It’s a great way to see the city from above without worrying about traffic. Then head to Bayfront Park or the Miami Riverwalk for a peaceful stroll with skyline and water views.

Sunset: Bayside or Biscayne Bay Cruise

Wind down your day with a sunset boat cruise around Biscayne Bay. You’ll catch golden-hour views of the Miami skyline, celebrity homes, and the sparkling water.

If you’d rather stay on land, grab a cocktail at a rooftop bar or a beachfront lounge.

Evening: Dinner and Nightlife in South Beach

End your day with a delicious dinner and if you still have energy after dinner, check out the nightlife scene in South Beach. Whether you’re into salsa dancing, live music, or chic cocktail lounges, there’s something for every vibe.

A Few More Options

The above would be my choice on how to spend one day in Miami, but if you want some more options (maybe you have extra days or maybe you’ve already done some of these things), here are some more ideas:

Walk Down Española Way

Española Way was one of Miami Beach’s first commercial developments. It was designed in the 1920s!

Española Way is just a short walk from Ocean Drive. It’s more quaint and has has plenty of cute restaurants and cafes. It’s a fun area to wander!

Shop at the Bayside Marketplace

The Bayside Marketplace is an outdoor shopping mall. There are boutiques, restaurants, and live music.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens are a great option for you if you want a mix of gorgeous landscaping and history all mixed into one.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is nestled on Biscayne Bay. It’s a historic estate that was built in the early 1900s as the winterhome of James Deering.

The style combines Italian Renaissance architecture with Mediterranean Revival style, so it feels like you’re in Europe! Plus, it’s surrounded by gorgeous, well-taken care of gardens and breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay.

The mansion itself has lavish rooms filled with antiques and art from the 15th-19th centuries.

South Pointe Park

At the very southern tip of Miami Beach, South Pointe Park is a scenic waterfront spot with plenty to do. It’s a bit more of a laid-back spot and a great place to check out some incredible views of the city.

The park is 17 acres and has views of both the ocean and Government Cut. Government Cut is the main ocean entrance to the Port of Miami and Biscayne Bay.

It’s a perfect spot to watch cruise ships go by because you can also see the high rises of downtown Miami behind them!

The park also has green spaces to enjoy nature, walking and biking paths, a playground and splashpad for kids, and a fishing pier.

Miami Botanical Garden

The Miami Botanical Garden is in the heart of Miami Beach, a 10 minute drive from South Beach. There are 3 acres of gorgeous gardens!

It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9-5 (closed Mondays). Best of all? Admission is free!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re passing through (maybe on your way to the Florida Keys or Key West!), taking a day trip, or using Miami as a pre-cruise stop, this one day Miami itinerary packs in the best of Miami without feeling rushed.

A Miami vacation is a perfect place to experience tons of different things by visiting just one city – beautiful beaches, culture, food, and art is just the tip of the iceberg. But hopefully this itinerary gives you a taste of Miami. And if you have a great time, then hopefully you can come back soon for a longer stay!
