Atlantis vs Baha Mar: Honest Comparison of 2 Bahamas Resorts

Nassau is a top destination for many people seeking an island getaway. If you’re considering Nassau for a vacation, it often comes down to two major resorts: Atlantis Paradise Island or Baha Mar.

Both offer sprawling resorts, endless pools, and stunning beachfronts—but they do have some differences. So which is the better choice?

Here’s how they compare so you can decide which is best for your family, friends’ trip, or romantic escape.

Accommodations/Hotel Rooms

Both Atlantis and Baha Mar offer a variety of accommodations within their properties (more on that below).

  • As a whole, the rooms at Atlantis can feel a bit dated in some towers.
  • Baha Mar is newer than Atlantis. It has more modern amenities and the rooms are newer and upscale overall.

As I mentioned, both resorts have several accommodation options to choose from. This accommodates things like different budgets (though this doesn’t mean that I’d consider it a budget friendly place), proximity to certain locations on the resort, and varying levels of luxury.

You can book Atlantis with Marriott Bonvoy points and the Baha Mar with Hyatt points.

Atlantis has five different hotels to choose from:

  • The Coral: Room rates here are the most budget-friendly. Not surprisingly, it’s also the most dated option.
  • The Royal: If you’ve ever seen a picture of Atlantis, it’s probably of the Royal towers. These are in the middle of the resort, a great spot to be in the middle of the action. The prices here are right in the middle compared to the other options.
  • The Reef: Larger rooms with kitchens or kitchenettes. This is where we stayed and it was great for our family.
  • The Cove: This is the most luxurious option. You have access to an adults-only pool that’s only accessible to people staying at the Cove.
  • Harborside Resort: Larger, apartment-style accommodations. Technically, it’s off property but you have access to the waterpark and the walk really isn’t longer from Harborside to the main attractions than it is from the Cove or the Reef.

Baha Mar has three different hotels to choose from:

  • Grand Hyatt Baha Mar: This is the largest option and is also where we stay every time we go. It has a nice central location convenient to everything on the resort.
  • SLS Baha Mar: This is more of a party atmosphere. There is an adults-only pool.
  • Rosewood Baha Mar: If you like luxurious accommodations, you definitely want to choose the Rosewood. It is the most luxurious option that includes access to a private pool and a private beach.

Pools

Atlantis has 14 pools with pools for those who want a party to a zero-entry pool great for families. The pools are located all throughout the property, so in between thrilling water park rides, you can go pool hopping.

However, Atlantis pools can get crowded, especially if there are a lot of cruise ships in port since the resort sells day passes to cruise ship guests.

Baha Mar has more than 10 pools spread throughout the property, each with a different personality—from family-friendly splash zones to serene adults-only spots.

The best pool at Baha Mar is Dean’s Blue Hole. It’s a pool that has a waterfall, a little grotto-type area that gives you aquarium views, and a cliff-jumping area.

Baha Mar isn’t inundated by cruise guests like Atlantis is and it feels like there are fewer crowds as a whole.

We have heard a lot of people mention that the pools close early at both resorts. We didn’t really notice this/it wasn’t a problem for us, but that could definitely be because we had toddlers and/or a baby at both resorts and were ready to be back in our rooms pretty early.

Beaches

Atlantis has 6 miles of beautiful beaches. There are a few different beach areas and each is absolutely stunning with crystal-clear waters.

You can snorkel from the beach as well and a lot of people have seen sea turtles right off the beach.

The beach at Baha Mar is much smaller (0.57 miles) and is part of Cable Beach. The snorkeling isn’t as good but the beach is pristine with gorgeous water and plenty of loungers.

Overall Atmosphere and Vibe

Atlantis feels like stepping into a theme park mixed with a mega-resort.

It has giant water slides, aquariums, and a constant buzz of activity. It’s perfect if you want high-energy and action-packed days. Families with kids especially love it, since there’s always something to do.

Baha Mar has a more modern, polished feel. It’s a stunning resort; luxurious without being stuffy, with an emphasis on chic design, elevated dining, and a nice casino. It tends to attract couples, groups of friends, and travelers who want a stylish resort atmosphere. There is a nice waterpark that’s still pretty new, but it’s not nearly as large as Atlantis.

Another thing that isn’t a big deal, but did make a bit of difference is that Atlantis gives you disposable wrist bracelets to wear. This is what gets you access to the pools, beaches, and to pick up beach towels. Baha Mar gives you nice rubber bracelets for easy access to everything – they open your hotel room, allow you to charge things to your room, ect. We never had to fumble through our stuff to try to find a key or credit card.

Resort Amenities, Activities, and Entertainment

Atlantis doubles as a marine attraction with its aquariums that have tons of sea life, dolphin experiences, and a stingray cove. You’ll also find shopping, a casino, and nightly entertainment. For families, it’s like a built-in theme park.

Baha Mar leans into elevated experiences: cooking classes, spa treatments, golf, and art installations. It also has the largest casino in Nassau (I actually won $200 here, so I’m pretty happy about that) and lively nightlife scene.

Waterparks

The Atlantis waterpark is absolutely massive. It’s probably the biggest draw to Atlantis if you’re a thrill-seeker or a family with kids.

There are a lot of water slides and one even takes you through the shark tank. There is a rapid river. It is not a lazy river with rapids and waterfalls – it’s a bit intense!

We were there with our toddlers so we didn’t have to worry about height rules (which is 48 inches) and our kids were happy to play in the kids’ area. It’s a nice area for smaller kids with smaller slides connected to a zero entry pool. Living in Florida, we are spoiled with a lot of nice splash pads and pools – this one was great!

Baha Mar‘s waterpark, Baha Bay, has a true lazy river, a wave pool, and a couple of slides.

I have heard parents of older kids say that Atlantis can be overwhelming for keeping everyone together. At Baha Mar, it’s easier to let your kids go down the slide without worrying about getting separated but Atlantis is much larger and cell service isn’t always dependable.

The toddler slide and one of the big slides at the splash park at Atlantis

I’m not entirely sure if the Baha Beach Club at Baha Mar should go under the waterpark or pool section. Technically, it’s within the waterpark but it’s more of a pool. Basically, you can pay to rent a chair or lounger. When you do this, you get it for the entire day (so you can come and go) and you get access two private infinity pools that overlook the beach. Also, the amount you spend on your lounger or chair also goes towards food/drink. So we paid $250 for a lounger and got a $250 food/drink credit (which does go quickly at Baha Mar, especially if you are drinking). There is absolutely nothing like this at Atlantis.

If you’re like us and traveling with kids, we felt that both were family-friendly resorts. Atlantis being better for older kids tall enough for water slides and Baha Mar being better for younger kids or for families who might want to give their kids a little more independence to ride the slides without worrying about them getting lost.

Food and Restaurants

The restaurants are very overpriced. We knew this going into both vacations and yet we still had a little sticker shock the first time we visited (side note: I have a post on how to save money at Atlantis).

I think that what is considered “good food” is very subjective. And I’ve noticed that play out in reviews of the restaurants at both resorts. Some say it’s expensive but worth it. Others feel it’s not worth the splurge and they expected more for the money.

Atlantis has over 20 restaurants ranging from celebrity chef outposts to casual snack spots.

In our experience, Atlantis was underwhelming (and we didn’t have any expectations). After a disappointing meal, we mostly stuck to the “cheaper” options like Shake Shack and the poolfront restaurants that serve simple food like burgers. We didn’t eat out for breakfast and instead chose to eat that in our room.

Cocodrilo was a disappointing experience at Atlantis, but it was gorgeous

Baha Mar has more than 40 dining options. From street food stalls to fine dining, the food scene is often considered more modern and upscale compared to Atlantis.

Our first visit to Baha Mar was also our first trip traveling with two kids and they were very young. We wanted more laid back options that we could either not have to worry about our little kids disturbing other guests as much or that we could take to our room. At this stage in our life, we also didn’t want to have to dress up for dinner.

The food trucks on the beach closed an hour earlier than their posted hours and one of the more laid back restaurants was closed for a private party. We kind of started panicking, but luckily we were able to get into the pizza place without a reservation. I think that this was luck because we were visiting when it wasn’t busy. Usually reservations are highly recommended.

Atlantis has several gift shop/convenience shop type of stores located all throughout the property so in a pinch you could always stop in for some chips, ramen, or something like that. This was nice in a bind. Something more readily available like this at Baha Mar would have brought me some peace of mind when we were struggling to find dinner the night that the food trucks closed early.

Marine Life

Atlantis has the absolute best marine life and animal encounters and most of it is included in the cost of your stay for Atlantis guests. First, all throughout the resort they have little marine habitats that you can see while walking around – fish, turtles, sting rays, and more.

But the absolute best part of Atlantis is that they have The Dig and the Predator Lagoon & Tunnel. Basically, it’s an aquarium that’s free and walking through is so cool!

More of the aquariums at Atlantis. We noticed something new every day!

We had such a great time checking out these spots every single day of our trip. We as parents loved it AND our toddlers loved it – it was a great family activity without spending more money.

We have season passes to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and this truly rivals that. We visited multiple times per day and it was so large that each day, we found something new that we hadn’t noticed the day before. The Dig is huge and the Predator Lagoon and Tunnel is a tunnel where the fish and sharks swim above you.

We didn’t do any of the paid options like swimming with the dolphins or the sea lion encounter, but they have those as well.

Baha Mar does have touch tanks and marine life exhibits at The Sanctuary and you can feed birds at their small aviary but neither are included in your stay.

Baha Mar has a flamingo parade which is free. It’s exactly what it sounds like – a flock of flamingos will walk through the resort. It’s really fun!

Cost

I really think that as a whole, both resorts are fairly similar. Any given day might vary some, especially since both resorts have multiple options.

Things on site at both resorts are quite expensive as well. Neither resort is a good budget destination.

We do use our World of Hyatt points to stay at Baha Mar, which makes it significantly cheaper for us, though.

Customer Service

This is just my experience, but we had significantly better customer service at Baha Mar. In fact, the customer service we experienced in Atlantis was downright bad.

Not only did they upgrade us without us asking upon checkin (this was completely unexpected – we are not Globalist with Hyatt or anything!) but every employee we encountered was genuinely friendly.

At Atlantis, it felt like many employees were annoyed by our presence. Not only that, but we were actually scolded on multiple occasions for breaking rules we didn’t know existed.

We were scolded for:

  • Our kids jumping into the pool. It was not an adults-only pool and we actually were the only ones at the pool at the time. Apparently no jumping in the pool is allowed, which was so bizarre to us. I totally understand that people would want a section where they can enjoy a calm, relaxed pool atmosphere but there is an adults-only pool and this wasn’t one of them, so it was strange to me.
  • Trying to bring a towel to the room.

It’s totally fine that we were unintentionally breaking the rules and needed to be informed, but it was done in an over the top rude way. We truly always try to be respectful anywhere we are visiting and we weren’t breaking the rules on purpose.

Atlantis has a map you can download that will give you directions on how to get from one place to the next but it often wouldn’t load for us. Every time we asked an employee how to get around, they either didn’t know or they gave us incorrect directions.

Alternatively, at Baha Mar we asked how to get to a specific pool on our first night there and instead of giving us directions, the employee literally walked us to the pool.

Based on this alone, Baha Mar will probably always be my personal favorite to return to between the two.

Which Resort Should You Choose?

  • Pick Atlantis if: You’re traveling with kids, love big water parks, marine animals, or if you want a vacation that feels like an adventure every day. I also prefer the beaches at Atlantis.
  • Pick Baha Mar if: You prefer a modern, luxury vibe with amazing dining, nightlife, and a balance of family and adult-oriented experiences. I also prefer the pools (and the beach club) at Baha Mar. I also prefer Baha Mar for younger kids and adult trips.

Both resorts deliver incredible Bahamian getaways. The best choice for you just depends on whether you want theme-park-style excitement or a sleek luxury escape.
